Unalloyed rolled steel for quenching and tempering according to DIN EN 10083/DIN EN ISO 683.
Often used for force-transmitting parts with moderately high stresses, such as shafts, axles or screws, where increased strength is of primary importance. Due to its comparatively high carbon content, C45E is difficult to weld. The steel variant “E” ensures a more favourable degree of purity, but with somewhat less favourable machinability compared to the almost analogous “R” variant. In some cases, double certification of C45E/R takes place.
