C15E

Unalloyed case-hardening steel, rolled according to DIN EN 10084/DIN EN ISO 683 or in bright condition according to DIN EN 10277.

Use for general applications in vehicle and machine parts such as geared parts, pins, rods, spacers, axles where a rather low strength but high toughness is required. Due to its low hardness and strength, C15E can be cold formed to a certain extent. Case hardening of the components, in which carbon is introduced into the edge area, makes it possible to achieve a relatively hard and wear-resistant surface with a tough core.

Due to the low carbon content, C15E is very easy to weld. The steel variant “E” ensures a more favourable degree of purity, but with somewhat less favourable machinability compared to the almost analogous “R” variant. In some cases, double certification of C15E/R takes place.
